Challenges & Solutions

Doubling Capacity

A holistic phasing concept enables the expansion while maintaining cleanroom status at all times.

Flexibility for New Technologies

Logistics processes were optimised and automated to support future technological developments.

Clean room conversion without downtime

Stage concept ensured cleanroom status; coordinated replacement of sterilization and introduction of automated logistics — without production downtime.

The Project in Detail

B. Braun Medical AG produces highly specialised single‑use plastic components at its site in Escholzmatt. Continuous portfolio expansion and the introduction of new product systems required a substantial increase in production capacity. As general planner, IE Plast assumed responsibility for integrated construction, operational and logistics planning. Particular attention was paid to the stringent requirements of cleanroom‑based plastics production. Through IE’s cross‑disciplinary expertise in logistics, automation and cleanroom design, production capacity at the existing site was almost doubled.

The Challenge

The project demanded a high degree of flexibility to respond to changing market conditions and emerging technologies in plastics processing. At the same time, production processes had to be further automated to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs. The primary objective was to double production capacity within the existing facility. This required a comprehensive reorganisation of plastics processing workflows, replacement of the existing sterilisation system with a more efficient solution, and the creation of additional space for the development of new technologies - all while maintaining ongoing operations.

Key success Factors

A decisive factor was IE Plast’s extensive experience in the plastics industry, particularly in  Cleanroo environments. IE Plast not only delivered complete construction planning but also redesigned all operational and logistics processes without interrupting production. A holistic phasing strategy ensured that cleanroom conditions were maintained throughout the project. Careful coordination of construction and operational activities, combined with close cooperation between B. Braun Medical AG and IE Plast, ensured adherence to budget, schedule and quality requirements.
