Originally, Bosshard-Farben AG planned to expand logistics only. However, a thorough process analysis by IE Technology showed that investing in a modern production facility at the Rümlang headquarters would be the more strategic choice. The Project in Detail
Just in time for the 75th anniversary of Bosshard-Farben AG in Rümlang, IE Technology completed the full restructuring of the production site and handed over one of Europe’s most modern paint factories. As part of several feasibility studies and master plans, IE’s experts demonstrated that Bosshard’s original decision to expand the site would have exceeded the available budget. Instead, they developed a tailored concept to restructure the existing premises, enabling the same increase in logistics capacity at significantly lower cost. This included a new factory building, which also made it possible to increase production capacity and broaden the product range.
The Challenge
For more than 75 years, Bosshard-Farben AG has been producing a wide range of paints in Rümlang. When the site’s logistics reached its capacity limits in 2017 due to the growing product variety, management intended to expand the site. The plan was to relocate all logistics to a new building on an adjacent plot. However, a feasibility study by IE Technology showed that a new build on the neighbouring property that had already been purchased would exceed the target budget. Yet the need to expand capacity remained. IE’s experts therefore faced the challenge of developing an alternative solution – without the additional plot and within the defined budget.
Key Success Factors
IE prepared several feasibility and concept studies and ultimately developed a tailored master plan for the most efficient capacity expansion. Instead of outsourcing logistics, the entire site was restructured to create space for a new production facility and to noticeably optimise all other processes.
During execution, IE Technology was able to demonstrate its full industrial construction expertise. The relocation of the huge binder tanks and the container washing system, as well as the highly complex hygiene concept for safe biocide processing, were implemented with distinction – supported by industry know-how from the food and pharmaceutical sectors. The result: Bosshard increased the flexibility and capacity of its entire logistics operation very efficiently, stayed within the desired budget and, at the same time, achieved an increase in production capacity with one of Europe’s most modern paint factories.
