Challenges & Solutions
Modification During Ongoing GMP Production Without Sacrificing Quality
Fully Synchronized Production Processes Through an Intelligent Zone Concept
The Project in Detail
DSM Nutritional Products is the global market leader in innovative vitamin products and fine chemicals for the food, pet food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. With an annual output of approximately 40,000 tonnes, the Sisseln production site alone supplies more than half of global market demand.
To further improve both product quality and production volume, fully synchronized processes had to be implemented and existing industrial buildings comprehensively modernized. IE Life Science was commissioned as general planner and total contractor to carry out the GMP‑compliant conversion during ongoing operations.
The Challenge
The conversion project was subject to extremely high quality assurance and hygiene requirements. GMP compliance was therefore defined as a central requirement in the project specifications. At the same time, the conversion had to be carried out during ongoing production without any negative impact on manufacturing processes. In addition to the technical challenges, extensive coordination was required between authorities, company management, plant personnel and all project stakeholders – all of which was managed within the framework of comprehensive general planning.
Key Success Factors
rom the outset, IE Life Science contributed in‑depth expertise in modern industrial construction. Drawing on experience from pharmaceutical and food industry projects, a multi‑stage operating and zoning concept was developed based on the proven IE methodology. this concept optimized personnel and material flows while minimizing processing, cleaning and changeover times. CIP systems formed the technical basis for this approach, alongside strict adherence to GMP, SHE and hygiene requirements. In addition to the renovation of existing buildings, the construction of new cleanrooms, gowning areas and a warehouse formed an integral part of the holistic concept, resulting in a future‑proof and highly efficient production environment.
