Challenges & Solutions

Three development options evaluated

A comprehensive master plan based on feasibility studies provided a clear comparison of alternatives and led to an optimal operational layout.

Sustainability

A photovoltaic system with 1,803 modules was implemented, with provision for future expansion.

Efficient material flow

Lean lift/high-compact warehouse connect EC (injection molding) and OG (toolmaking) — integrated storage for tools/spare parts, without detours.

The Project in Detail

Huber Kunststoff AG combines tool design, tool manufacturing and injection molding production under one roof and is regarded as a specialist in holistic plastics solutions. To support continued growth, the company had already doubled its capacity in 2010.

When further capacity expansion became necessary in 2018, three options were considered: extension of the existing facility, development of adjacent land, or construction of a new greenfield site. Based on feasibility studies and an individual masterplan, Huber Kunststoff AG chose the most efficient solution – implementation with IE Plast.

The Challenge

The evaluation of three development scenarios required an integrated approach to combine toolmaking and injection molding production with efficient material flows. In addition, as a sustainability‑driven company, Huber Kunststoff AG placed strong emphasis on achieving the highest possible level of energy self‑sufficiency based on renewable sources.

Key Success Factors

After securing an ideally suited site in Sommerau, IE Plast developed a tailor‑made masterplan based on a structured zoning concept. The resulting operational layout consistently focuses on productivity. Injection molding production on the ground floor and the tool shop on the upper level are connected via lean lift systems, which also serve as storage for tools and spare parts, enabling efficient material flow. Intelligent coordination of material and personnel flows further enhances operational efficiency. Future readiness was also embedded in the energy concept: the photovoltaic system with 1,803 modules was designed for expansion. If the facility is extended during ongoing operation, the ground‑mounted PV system can be relocated to the roof of the new building.
