MCAM Symalit AG - Planning and Execution of a Production facility for efficient raw-material conveying
MCAM Symalit AG, based in Lenzburg, is Switzerland’s market-leading provider of plastic cable protection conduit solutions. To reduce exposure to price fluctuations in plastic granules, MCAM Symalit significantly expanded its storage capacities. IE Plast delivered a future-ready raw-material conveying system as the design-build contractor, including energy optimisation through a centralised vacuum system – all while operations continued uninterrupted.

Challenges & Solutions
Optimising raw-material conveying without production downtime.
Major expansion of granulate storage capacity
Sustainable energy supply through waste heat utilisation
The Project in Detail
As Switzerland’s market-leading provider of plastic cable protection conduit solutions, MCAM Symalit AG offers a broad portfolio of conduits, bends, fittings and accessories for a wide range of applications. To further strengthen this leading position despite significant price volatility in plastic granules, the Lenzburg-based company decided to massively expand its in-house storage capacities.
At the same time, a fundamental optimisation of raw-material conveying was required. For the extensive planning and construction measures, MCAM Symalit sought a reliable construction partner with long-standing experience in the plastics industry – and appointed IE Plast’s industrial construction specialists as the general contractor.
The Challenge
In the production of cable protection products, raw-material conveying plays a key role. Therefore, the entire process – from delivery through to feeding the extruders – needed to become more efficient and flexible, with the planned expansion of granulate storage as the central measure. As part of cost optimisation, the energy supply also needed to be made more sustainable and efficient.
A particular challenge for IE Plast’s planners: all measures had to be implemented without affecting ongoing operations.
Key Success factors
Thanks to comprehensive concept studies and excellent coordination between operations and planners, IE Plast executed the entire project on schedule without any production interruption. With a tailored plant layout, the entire raw-material conveying system was organised far more efficiently while being designed for smooth future expansion.
The media feeds to the extruders are now designed for a wide range of granulate containers and enable container-independent material supply to any extruder. They were installed on steel platforms – as were the building services installations – and can be adapted at any time. In parallel, IE Plast executed a centralised vacuum system whose waste heat is used to heat the warehouse and bending shop.
This delivered a significant improvement in energy efficiency as part of the sustainable optimisation of raw-material conveying.
