Challenges & Solutions
High storage capacity
Increased pallet throughput
The Project in Detail
Originally founded as a corrugated board plant, the Bourquin Group has become one of the leading suppliers of packaging materials in Switzerland’s packaging industry. The company’s continued growth made it necessary to expand the production facilities and buildings at the Oensingen site. IE Technology was commissioned as general planner to design and deliver a state-of-the-art order-picking and high-bay warehouse.
As an experienced industrial construction specialist for the packaging industry, IE Technology convinced with a holistic planning approach, including a robust logistics concept.
The Challenge
The biggest challenge in this industrial construction project was Bourquin SA’s high requirements for the new high-bay warehouse. In addition to creating storage capacity of around 10,000 pallet spaces (for pallet heights of up to two metres), our experts also had to make picking processes more efficient. Material flows needed to be optimised and pallet throughput increased to up to 100 pallets per hour.
In addition, a modern staff canteen, several archive areas and an auditorium were to be integrated.
Key Success Factors
IE Technology consistently planned the expansion of the production site from the inside out, in order to balance aesthetics and functionality. For example, the steel structure of the high-bay warehouse is directly connected to the storage racks. In addition, Westfalia’s new TransFaster®/Aviator® high-rack technology allows rack vehicles to move floorlessly. As a result, complex transfer and conveyor technology could be eliminated.
More efficient order-picking processes, optimised material flows and increased pallet throughput also ensure greater efficiency. The building concept is complemented by open-plan workspaces that are seamlessly integrated into the structure and equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
