Construction planning and warehouse logistics in parallel
The Project in Detail
The renowned cosmetics company Estée Lauder has been active in Switzerland for over 40 years and supplies the important travel retail channel from here – delivering to more than 120 countries worldwide. To manage continued growth in this market over the long term, Estée Lauder decided in 2017 to build an additional logistics centre in Switzerland and commissioned IE Technology as general planner for planning and execution.
The industrial construction specialists from Zurich had already delivered the existing logistics centre and once again impressed with their holistic planning approach.
The Challenge
The rapid growth of the travel retail market presented all parties with significant challenges – particularly in terms of scale and the very high throughput volumes to be handled. The objective was to create an efficient logistics center on around 21,000 m², providing sufficient capacity for long-term growth.
Midway through the project, it also became clear that growth would be significantly higher than initially forecast. This required further re-planning of the building, building services and building automation – making the already ambitious schedule even more demanding.
Key Success Factors
IE Technology had already planned and delivered the existing distribution centre. Thanks to cross-disciplinary expertise in logistics, operations planning and construction planning – combined with many years of experience in the cosmetics sector – the team completed the project on time despite challenging conditions.
From the feasibility study through concept and system design to implementation planning and execution, IE Technology consistently applied the principles of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Particularly close and goal-oriented collaboration between building planners, specialist designers and the client ensured that even major planning adjustments during the project could be implemented without jeopardising the guaranteed completion date.
