MPREIS – General Planning and Feasibility Study for Expanding a Bakery

MPREIS is one of Austria’s best‑known food retailers, operating its own production facilities for meat and baked goods. As general planner, IE Food was responsible for the Planning and Execution of a bakery expansion while production continued without interruption.

Challenges & Solutions

Optimally integrate bakery and meat production with logistics and frozen storage

Based on a feasibility study, a fully automated logistics bridge was designed to connect the bakery. Without interrupting the cold chain. The bridge was equipped with ventilation technology for cooling to prevent fluctuating temperatures. For greater efficiency and profitability.

Bakery Expansion During Ongoing Production

Through well‑structured construction process planning and consistent phasing, IE Food ensured that bakery and meat production continued without interruption. Close coordination with MPREIS operations allowed construction activities to be flexibly aligned with daily production requirements.

Fully Automated Logistics for Maximum Efficiency

IE Food designed a fully automated logistics solution with optimised transport routes and seamless process flows across all production areas. A newly constructed logistics bridge connects the bakery, deep‑freeze warehouse and adjacent production areas, ensuring short distances and reliable maintenance of the cold chain.

The Project in Detail

At its Völs site, MPREIS operates in‑house production facilities for meat and baked goods. The objective of the project was to expand the bakery while maintaining full production output. As general planner, IE Food optimised logistics processes and increased the efficiency of the existing deep‑freeze warehouse through the use of fully automated conveyor and transport systemszchnik. This significantly improved overall production profitability. The industrial construction project was delivered from a single source, both technically and architecturally.

The Challenge

The project posed a number of complex requirements: How can the bakery be optimally connected to the deep‑freeze warehouse while meeting strict hygiene and logistics standards? How can crates from multiple baking lines be automatically palletised and transported without interrupting the cold chain?
How can the warehouse be expanded by up to 1,800 pallet positions? And how can all of this be achieved while food production continues uninterrupted? An additional challenge was the fact that the deep‑freeze warehouse is separated from the main production building by a public road.

Key Success Factors

Planning at IE Food consistently followed the inside‑out principle. The focus was placed first on bakery and meat processing workflows. Based on the feasibility study, a fully automated logistics bridge was designed to connect the bakery and warehouse while maintaining uninterrupted cold‑chain conditions. The bridge was equipped with dedicated cooling and ventilation systems to prevent temperature fluctuations. To further increase efficiency and profitability, logistics processes were fully digitised and automated using state‑of‑the‑art crate conveyor systems and articulated robots. The technically demanding site expansion clearly demonstrates IE Food’s comprehensive expertise in industrial construction for the food industry.
