The Food Factory of the Future: Four Success Factors and the IE Master Plan

The food industry is caught between rising product‑safety requirements and economic pressure to produce more efficiently and cost‑effectively. Companies that fail to plan strategically today will fall behind tomorrow.

IE Food has identified four key success factors for sustainably successful food production – and with the IE Master Plan, has created a tool that enables managed growth instead of ad‑hoc construction.

1. Robust Process Design as a Foundation

Future developments must be considered early – not only when they arise. Intelligent selection and configuration of production technologies, planned scalability and the continuous integration of automation systems into ERP systems are crucial.

RAMS criteria – reliability, availability, maintainability and plant safety – play a central role. Managing these conflicting priorities constructively in the early planning phases creates decisive competitive advantages.

2. Digitalization and Automation

In highly competitive markets, comprehensive digitalisation and automation are decisive competitive advantages. There is no one‑size‑fits‑all solution – yet seamless data management across factories and organisations is essential.

Holistic planning and implementation of innovative digitalisation concepts saves time and costs while delivering lasting competitive benefits.

3. Modern Intralogistics

Florian Alexander, Head of Logistics at IE Munich, emphasises: modern, sophisticated intralogistics is one of the most critical success factors for the economically viable food factory of the future. Modern shuttle systems already achieve fully automated picking rates of 85 percent and higher.

4. Sustainability as an Economic Factor

Tobias Rosenbaum, Managing Director IE Food, states clearly: in the future, success will not come despite sustainability, but because of sustainability.

Sustainability in industrial construction involves far more than solar systems or KfW standards. Integrating production processes with building and plant infrastructure, eliminating unnecessary routes and thoroughly analysing media supply systems offer significant savings potential.

The IE Master Plan: Managed Growth Instead of Haphazard Expansion

Many food manufacturers experience the strain of reactive investments – only acting out of necessity until facilities reach their limits. The IE Master Plan is a reliable management tool that governs change and future growth scenarios.

Leading companies such as Nestlé, Emmi, Hochdorf Swiss Nutrition, Ehrmann and Pacovis rely on IE Master Plans.
